To get your winery recommended by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, make the same facts about you easy to find and agree everywhere an AI looks: your website (with structured data), your Google Business Profile and reviews, and trusted third-party profiles such as your Oxto listing. The fastest first step is the free Oxto Visibility Score, which scans your website, Google listing and real ChatGPT answers and shows you exactly what to fix.

This matters now because guests have changed how they plan. They ask an assistant for “a relaxed Sonoma winery with a view that takes reservations for six,” and they book from the short list it returns. If your winery is not in that answer, you are not in the trip.

Are guests really using ChatGPT to choose wineries?

Yes. In December 2025 the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Napa Valley wineries were hearing from millennial and Gen Z guests that they found the winery through ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. One Napa group, Far Niente Wine Estates, told the paper it adopted an “LLM search strategy” in March and saw website traffic from chatbots grow about eight times since January, with nearly three-quarters of it from ChatGPT.

The industry has noticed. In The Weinheimer Group’s Wine Industry AI Marketing Readiness Report, released April 21, 2026, 60% of winery respondents named improving online discoverability as their top AI opportunity.

We see it from the other side too. Oxto logs the AI crawlers that visit its pages, and ChatGPT regularly fetches Oxto winery profiles while answering people’s questions about where to taste. That is the practical reason your Oxto profile matters: it is one of the pages an assistant reads before it names a winery.

How do ChatGPT, Google AI and Perplexity decide which wineries to recommend?

AI assistants do not rank wineries the way a critic does. They search the web, read a handful of sources, and repeat what those sources agree on. Seven signals decide most of it:

  • Sources the assistant trusts. Assistants that search the web pull from tourism boards, wine publications, local guides, review sites and structured directories. The Chronicle asked ChatGPT how it picks wineries, and it described blending expert consensus with visitor reviews.
  • Consensus. When your website, Google listing and third-party profiles all say the same thing (hours, tasting fee, reservations, what you pour), the assistant can state it with confidence. Conflicting facts get dropped or hedged.
  • Structured data. Schema.org markup (Winery or LocalBusiness, address, hours, price range, events) hands the facts over in a format machines read directly. Google’s own guidance asks that structured data match the visible text on the page.
  • Fresh facts. Assistants favor current information: this season’s hours, current fees, upcoming events. A 2023 tasting menu on your site is a reason to describe you inaccurately or skip you.
  • Reviews and replies. Google says prominence includes how many reviews you have, and that positive reviews and helpful replies help a business stand out. Review text also feeds the adjectives assistants use about you.
  • Google Business Profile. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results, and its AI features guidance tells site owners to keep Business Profile information up to date.
  • Consistent name, address and phone (NAP). The same name, address and phone everywhere is how an assistant knows the winery on your site, on Google and on Oxto is one place, not three.

Google is explicit that there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond sound search practice. It also notes that its AI features may use “query fan-out,” running several related searches at once. In practice that means a guest’s single question about a romantic Paso Robles tasting can pull from your site, your reviews and your directory listings in the same answer.

Two technical notes. ChatGPT’s search crawler is called OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so check that your robots.txt does not block it. And llms.txt, a plain-text summary file proposed in September 2024, gives assistants a short, clean description of who you are and which pages matter. It is not required by Google, but it is cheap to add.

How do I get my winery to show up in ChatGPT? A do-it-yourself checklist

You can do most of this yourself in a few afternoons. Work top to bottom, because the early items carry the most weight.

  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Correct category, hours (including seasonal), phone, website link, reservation link, at least 10 recent photos, and attributes like outdoor seating and dog friendly.
  • Reply to reviews, especially critical ones. Short, specific, signed by a person.
  • Match your NAP everywhere. Same winery name, street address and phone on your site, Google, Oxto, and any regional directory.
  • Put the facts on your homepage in plain text. Tasting fee, whether reservations are required, hours, party size limits, what makes the visit distinct. Not only inside images or PDFs.
  • Add structured data for your winery and your upcoming events, and make sure it matches what the page says.
  • Write a clear page title and meta description that name your region and what you offer, for example “Estate tastings in the Russian River Valley.”
  • List your events on your site and on Oxto with dates, prices and a booking link. Assistants answering “what is on this weekend” need something dated to cite.
  • Offer online booking. An assistant can recommend a place it cannot book, but guests planning a trip lean toward the ones they can reserve right now.
  • Add an llms.txt file and a sitemap, and confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot.
  • Claim and complete your Oxto profile. Description, wines, atmosphere and amenities, tasting fee range, photos, and a reservation link. It is one of the profiles assistants fetch.
  • Test it monthly. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity three questions a guest would ask about your region, and note whether you are named, whether your own site is cited, and whether the description is right.

That last step is tedious to do by hand, which is exactly what the Oxto Visibility Score automates. It asks ChatGPT three realistic trip-planning questions built from your own details and records whether you are named, cited and described accurately.

What does the free Oxto Visibility Score check?

The Oxto Visibility Score is a free check of how easily a guest planning a trip can find your winery, understand it and choose it. You enter your website, and it scores you out of 100 across five areas:

AreaWeightWhat it checks
Your website30 pointsHTTPS, mobile, page title and description, structured data, sitemap, llms.txt, page weight, online booking
Google Business Profile25 pointsRating, number of reviews, hours, photos, website linked, replies to critical reviews
AI answers20 pointsNamed in ChatGPT answers to three trip questions, your site used as a source, described accurately
Oxto profile15 pointsClaimed, full description, photos, tasting fee, wines and amenities, booking link
Events10 pointsUpcoming events on your site and listed on Oxto

The report shows your overall grade, how you rank against wineries nearby, what ChatGPT actually said, and your biggest fixes. Verify your email and you unlock every fix plus the Fix Center, which writes the exact text for your site (page titles, a visit page, an FAQ, structured data, llms.txt), tells you where to paste it for the website builder you use, drafts your Google review replies, and lets you send the whole package to whoever runs your site in one tap.

What does local SEO for a winery cost: DIY vs agency vs Oxto Verified?

Local SEO agencies charge by the month. Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers put the average local SEO retainer at $1,557 a month, with agencies averaging $1,819 and freelancers about $1,150. Oxto Verified costs $49 a month or $490 a year, with a 7-day free trial.

Most wineries do not need a $1,500 retainer. They need correct facts in the places assistants read, and someone checking every week that they stay correct.

Why is Oxto Verified the simplest way to get recommended in AI search?

Oxto Verified is the “have Oxto do it” version of the Visibility Score, and it fits wineries of every size, from a single tasting room to multi-estate portfolios. Here is what it includes:

  • Your Oxto profile, filled in and owner-managed. Description, editorial summary, wines, atmosphere tags, amenities, photos, tasting fee range and reservation info, written from your own site.
  • Your first event drafted, ready for you to add a date and publish.
  • The files your website needs (structured data, llms.txt and page titles), with instructions for your website builder.
  • A draft reply for your Google reviews.
  • Weekly visibility rescans, so you see your score move and catch anything that slipped.
  • Monthly articles written around what guests are searching for, built for AI search.

It costs $49 a month or $490 a year, and it starts with a 7-day free trial: your card is saved, you pay $0 today, and you can cancel anytime before the trial ends. Oxto does the Oxto side. Anything on your own website or Google listing is handed to you ready to paste; nothing changes there without you.

“Assistants repeat what the sources agree on. Your job is to make sure every source says the right thing.”

If you also want guests to book directly from those answers, Oxto Reserve adds reservations, deposits, ticketed events and a built-in guest CRM. For a broader view of where AI fits in your business, see AI for wineries in 2026.

Is there a local SEO case study for wineries and AI search?

The clearest public example is the one the San Francisco Chronicle reported: Far Niente Wine Estates, which owns three Napa Valley wineries, put an AI search strategy in place and saw chatbot-referred website traffic grow about eight times in under a year.

The pattern is the same at any size. The wineries that show up are the ones whose facts are complete, consistent and easy for an assistant to read. You can see where your winery stands against that bar in about a minute with the free Visibility Score.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my winery to show up in ChatGPT?

Make your facts complete and consistent everywhere ChatGPT looks: your website (with structured data and plain-text hours, fees and booking), your Google Business Profile and reviews, and third-party profiles such as Oxto. Make sure robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot. The free Oxto Visibility Score at oxtoapp.com/score checks what ChatGPT says about your winery today and lists the fixes.

What is GEO for wineries?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of getting your winery named and described correctly in AI answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. For wineries it mostly means accurate, consistent facts across your site, Google and trusted directories, plus structured data, reviews and fresh event information. Oxto Verified handles the Oxto side for $49 a month.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI search?

Yes. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results, and its AI features guidance tells site owners to keep Business Profile information current. Reviews, hours, photos and your website link all feed the answers assistants give about wineries near a guest.

Do I need an llms.txt file for my winery website?

It is not required. Google says AI Overviews need no special files. But llms.txt is a short plain-text summary that some AI assistants read, and it takes minutes to add. The Oxto Fix Center writes one for your winery, and Oxto Verified includes it.

How much does local SEO cost for a winery?

Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers put the average local SEO retainer at $1,557 a month. Oxto Verified costs $49 a month or $490 a year with a 7-day free trial, and covers the parts most wineries need for AI search: a complete Oxto profile, website files ready to paste, weekly visibility rescans and monthly articles.

Is Oxto a good fit for a large or multi-estate winery?

Yes. Oxto works for wineries of every size, from a single tasting room to multi-estate portfolios. Each estate gets its own Visibility Score and profile, and Oxto Reserve adds one login across several wineries with a winery switcher, team roles, and guest taste profiles that travel with each guest to any of your estates.
