About
Hermann Wiemer arrived from Germany's Mosel in 1968 with grafting skills and the audacity to plant vinifera in a region dominated by native hybrids. His nursery became the genetic foundation for Finger Lakes wine — if you're drinking Riesling in the region, it probably traces back to his rootstock. The estate went biodynamic under current winemaker Fred Merwarth, farming 140 acres on Seneca Lake's steep eastern slopes. The Rieslings remain the anchor — dry, Kabinett-style, and late harvest bottlings that balance laser acidity with expressive fruit. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir round out the lineup, but Riesling is the obsession. The tasting room sits above the vineyards with sweeping lake views, and the staff will nerd out on clonal selection and biodynamic prep if you ask. This isn't casual wine tourism — it's a master class in what cool-climate viticulture can achieve when you refuse to take shortcuts.
