Chateau Chantal sits at the top of Old Mission Peninsula like it owns the place, which it kind of does—commanding views over Grand Traverse Bay, a tasting room that handles crowds without feeling like a zoo, and a rare bed & breakfast operation upstairs where the founder's daughter might serve you breakfast. The wines are cool-climate Michigan done well: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling that benefits from the peninsula's lake-moderated microclimate. Staff knows their stuff and can guide newbies without condescension. The patio is the move when weather allows. It's romantic enough for couples, accommodating enough for families with kids, and the service consistently shows up—which apparently can't be said for every winery on this peninsula.
