Moose Mountain operates on its own clock: sunset tastings every second and fourth Saturday only, by reservation, starting at 4:30pm. Winemaker Richard Schmidt planted his first 455 vines after two decades as a reproductive endocrinologist, and now farms nearly 20 varietals organically across hillside estates in San Martin and Paso Robles' Adelaida AVA. The focus is Bordeaux—six red varieties in San Martin, plus Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Tannat, and Semillon in Paso. Schmidt's minimal intervention approach lets each vintage speak for itself. Tastings happen on the property with panoramic valley views, and the vibe is intimate—you're likely to chat with the winemaker himself. They're kid and dog friendly, encourage bringing food, and occasionally host plant-based wine dinners. It's not a typical drop-in winery experience; it's a purposeful, twice-monthly gathering on a private estate where the wine is bold and the hospitality genuine.
